13. There is no longer any doubt about the fact that India has been looking at ways to deepen its ties with Russia. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had even called Putin “an old friend” while addressing the parliament in October 2011. In September 2012, Defence Minister A K Antony met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in St Petersburg. Antony announced that India would buy four Mi-35M attack helicopters from Russia, and the deal was signed later that year. 14. Both countries are trying to find areas of mutual interest, particularly in defence. They have already agreed to cooperate in developing airbases and training facilities in each others' territories. India's Defence Ministry has expressed interest in acquiring the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, but this could take months before it gets clearance from Washington. 15. India and Russia have been developing their relations over the last few years, and both sides seem determined to continue this trend. India has been pushing for closer economic and trade ties with Russia, and has made some significant purchases from the country. In August 2012, India bought two MiG-29K fighters, worth $1 billion. In February 2013, India bought three Mi-35Ms helicopters from Russia, and in October the same year, it purchased two Mi-17V5s. The first batch of six MiG-21bis fighters (worth Rs 40,000 crore) arrived in May 2013.
16. India and Russia are also working together in the area of nuclear energy. India’s atomic energy programme is being supported by Russia. This includes building a 1,600 megawatt reactor in Kalpakkam near Chennai. The reactors are expected to generate power until 2060. The agreement was signed in 2010, and construction began in 2011.
